Yokoi Kinkoku (1761-1832) was a priest of the Jodo sect in the late Edo period. He later became a yamabushi hermit. He was excellent in painting, nurturing very distinctive style. Yokoi was born in Otsu, Omi Province. He went to Kyoto and became the chief priest of Kanaya-yama Gokurakuji Temple at the age of 21. Later he wandered across country, and in middle age he lived in Sumiyoshi-cho, Nagoya, where he met literary artists such as Naruto Suzuki and Yoshinobu Niwa, and learned painting from Gessho. He was so devoted to Yosa Buson that he was called "Omi Buson", and he also drew haiga with Sansui and people as his favorite subject. Much of the information known about Kinkoku comes from his autobiography, Biography of the Monk Kinkoku (Kinkoku Shōnin Goichidai-ki).
