FIJI. ART & LIFE IN THE PACIFIC.
By Steven Hooper, Professor of Visual Arts and Director of the Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK.

The author, formerly known as Steven Phelps, is the grandson of James Hooper, the renowned collector of ethnographic art. His famous collection, formed over a period of sixty years, was the last to remain in private hands. Steven Hooper (Phelps) studied this magnificent collection and in 1976 published "Art and Artefacts of the Pacific, Africa and the Americas. The James Hooper Collection" (London, Hutchinson, 1976). The book was at the same time the conclusion of James Hooper's lifetime work as well as the prelude to the sale of the entire collection in the following years at Christie's in London.

Although ''Fiji. Art & Life in the Pacific" was produced in conjunction with an exhbition of Fijian art, - the exhibition was first organised in the UK (Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich) and later at the LACMA, Los Angeles - this magnificent work is far more than merely an art book. In addition to an outstanding catalog of the works from the exhibition, Hooper presents a wonderful overview of the history and culture(s) of Fiji. It
is not only in his capacity as a top notch scholar, Hooper also proves to be an excellent and engaging writer.

1st Edition; 288 pages with a fully colour illustrated catalogue of more than 275 Fijian artifacts

Condition: Brand new in shrink wrap, measures h 27,6 x w 22 cm
