Lea-Francis - 2.5 Litre L-F Sport - 1950
Lea-Francis - 2.5 Liter L-F Sport - 1950
This model, the last of the true Lea-Francis cars that Coventry built, used a high-torque 2.5 liter "Big Four" engine producing 108 horsepower at 4000 rpm and a top speed of over 90 MPH.
However, as the production costs of these high-performance cars rose even further, production finally came to a halt at the end of 1953 after only 78 cars had been produced.
But the sheer quality of these highly exclusive sports cars is reflected in the number of them that still exist today – over 50%, which is a better survival rate than any other car from that era.
This example, chassis number 5160, initially served as a test and demonstration car for the Lea-Francis Works.
In 1953 the car was prepared for the 1000 Mille Race, but for unknown reasons it was withdrawn, completely recommissioned, repainted in Old English White and sold privately.
A full owner history of the car can be found on the 2.5 Litre Sports register and the car comes with a comprehensive history file including buff logbook and some very early invoices.
The car benefits from a total body-off restoration, carried out between 2011 and 2015, after which the car was driven only very sparingly (approx. 1500 miles). This restoration, while aimed at keeping the car as original as possible, included some useful improvements such as an alternator (in the original alternator housing) and a more efficient radiator core.
In 2020 the car underwent another extensive engine-out recommissioning (including a full rewiring, brake, clutch/gearbox and suspension service) and is now 100% road ready again.
This 2.5Litre L-F can be viewed in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands.
Extensive history and a photo report of the restoration are available.
As befits a true English classic, this one naturally leaks a drop of oil, and the paintwork does show some signs of use.
It is advisable to view the vehicle before bidding to avoid disappointment afterwards. For an appointment, please contact Catawiki.’
