A rare and vibrant lacquered zushi 厨子 (portable shrine) housing an embracing Kangiten figure 歓喜天 (God of obstacles, bliss and success), also known as Binayaka 毘那夜, or more commonly, Shôten 聖天 (lit. "sacred god").

The cylindrical zushi is covered in striking red lacquer, rising from a ridged base to a domed roof, surmounted by a tama finial. Upon opening the doors, a small bronze figure of the dual-bodied Kangiten is revealed, embracing on a lotus pad.

The base of the figure is signed 'Mitsuyoshi Gotô saku,' 後藤光義 alongside the inscription 'Bunka kutoshi chûshû' 文化九年仲秋 (Made by Mitsuyoshi Gotô, mid-autumn, ninth year of Bunka), Anno 1812.

The interior of the shrine includes a round plinth with metal fittings and a cylindrical lacquered cover for the figure.

Dimensions:
Zushi Height 42.5 cm, Diameter 21.5 cm, Figure Height 5.9 cm, Diameter 3.6 cm.
Weight of Figure 151.3 g.

Period: Japan – Edo period (1615-1868).

In good condition, with expected wear for its age, including small cracks in the lacquer, minor nicks to the edges, small scratches, and a few minor chips to the roof. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.

Kangiten is a deity venerated primarily in the Shingon and Tendai schools of Japanese Buddhism, regarded as the Buddhist counterpart of the Hindu god Ganesha. The dual-bodied Kangiten figure became popular during the late Heian period, depicted as an embracing male-female couple. This portrayal is distinct from the sexual yab-yum imagery of Nepal and Tibet, as both figures feature animal heads and are shown fully clothed.

When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
