Relief depicting the nativity (Luke chapter II), presumably German or Italian, Ca. 1800. Cartapesta (paper maché) also called 'the poor man's marble'
The scene depicts the visit of the shepperds to the new born infant Jezus as decscribed in the second chapter of the gospel of Saint Luke.
The composition in baroque style is probably based on a late 17th century painting of a unknown master.
The broken marble pillars are reminisent to the renaissance, a period with great interest in Roman culture.
The frame of the reliëf is made in a classicist style. Which makes it presumable that this work was made in the late 18th century or at least around 1800.
Dimensions: 74 x 52,5 x 3 cm.
In fairly good condition, some restaurations and traces of wear.
