Tom Of Finland - Exhibition Poster from 1984, Berlin- Germany

Original poster for one of Tom of Finland's first exhibitions at Anderes Ufer, which was the first gay and lesbian café in Europe open to the street with its large windows and visible to passers-by in Berlin (Germany).

The exhibition ran from April 1 to May 15, 1984, and was a great success in terms of sales and public, as well as in elevating the art of the legendary illustrator Tom of Finland. On the poster is also the time and address where you could see the exhibition.

The poster measures 42 x 59,5 cm, it has a wrinkle on the side due to age and handling, but nothing serious.

Touko Laaksonen (better known as Tom of Finland) was one of the most important homoerotic artists in history. Openly gay, he left no room for doubt in his illustrations about his sexual and artistic preferences and is therefore considered the most influential artist in gay culture in the second half of the 20th century.

A Finnish artist, he began drawing explicitly homoerotic works inspired by the muscular, manly Finnish workers who fascinated him as a child, at the age of 19 when he was studying art in Helsinki. When the Second World War broke out, the painter was called up and fell in love with another stereotype: the tough military man.

In the 1950s he began to send his drawings to the American magazine Physique Pictorial under the pseudonym Tom of Finland. His work quickly caught the attention of the gay community with his comic strips full of muscular lumberjacks, sailors, bikers, Nazis, cops, soldiers, cowboys and leather hulks. There is indeed nothing gayer than a macho man, and Tom of Finland proved it with his drawings, mostly done in black and white, in ink. His characters wear uniforms, are muscular and pack a punch, becoming references of gay aesthetics that still survive to this day.
