This large copper gong (dora) features an intricately raised dragon motif. Gongs like this are significant ceremonial instruments used in Buddhist rituals and services. Typically struck with a mallet, the gong produces a resonant sound that enhances the solemnity of the ceremony and helps to focus the attention of the participants. The sound and visual presence of a large gong like this one are integral to Buddhist art, playing an important role not only in acoustics but also in adding to the aesthetic and spiritual atmosphere of the temple. Measuring approximately 57 cm in diameter, this substantial gong symbolizes the grandeur of a temple and lends dignity to ritual gatherings.
The dragon motif is a symbol of power, strength, and protection in both Buddhist and traditional Japanese culture. In Buddhist iconography, the dragon often represents wisdom and is seen as a guardian of the teachings of Buddha, adding a deeper spiritual significance to the gong's design.
The gong comes with a wooden storage box and a cushion for proper display or storage. There is a crack on the lid of the box.
There are scratches, dirt, wear, and green patina due to age. Please check the photos for the condition.
Dimensions: approx. H 57 cm W 57 cm D 9.5 cm (excluding the central protrusion)
