An eye catching George Gray bright cut spoon, with a large bowl, measuring 7.4 cm by 4.2 cm, 22.5 cm in length, weighing 59 grams, having a very good construction. Initialled at top. With a very clear hallmark, which is always a plus.
George Gray is an interesting maker. Grimwade says “his first mark appears frequently over-struck of Hester Bateman and her successors Peter and Ann”. This opens up the whole question of how silversmiths operated in the late 18th century.
