View translationTwilight in the Village, Nara - (Yamato-ji boshoku) - Asano Takeji (1900-1998) - Published by Unsodo - Japan
No. 88903929
Lovely view of a village in Nara at twilight, the sky flooded with orange and peach light as the sun sets. The buildings are shadowed in blue, with a pine tree growing up in the courtyard near the center and bare branches silhouetted against the sky at night. A farmer makes his way along the road with a full basket on his back, while an elderly woman heads in the opposite direction, leaning on her cane. At right, furrows follow the curve of the road with fields stretching into the distance beyond. A beautiful design.
First pringt in 1953, this is later edition using the original woodblocks from original publisher Unsodo, Japan.
Asano Takeji(1900-1998)
Asano Takeji was a Japanese Shin-hanga and Sōsaku-Hanga artist. He was born in 1900 in Kyoto where he studied arts and crafts at the Kyoto City School of painting with Tomikichiro Tokuriki. He first learned Western oil painting and then turned to Japanese-style painting under Tsuchida Bakusen (1887-1936). He became an active member of the sosaku hanga group in Kyoto.
Starting in the 1950s, Asano designed a large number of Shin-hanga style prints for the Unsodo, which continue to be printed to this day. Especially the “famous views of Japan” series have been re-evaluated in recent years.
