Araki Goes to Vietnam
Nobuyoshi Araki
Hankyu Communications/2008/Japanese/150*230*15
A collection of photographs by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's leading photographers, “Araki Goes to Vietnam”. This book is a collection of photographs compiled from a project that was serialized in the Sankei Shimbun newspaper in 2007, and is a record of a visit to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Nobuyoshi Araki has compiled a photo collection of his visits to South Korea, Taiwan, China, and other Asian countries he has visited with writer Kenji Nakagami. From the usual photos taken on the plane, Araki captures what he sees and eats one after another. From the motorcycles that speed in groups, to the people on the streets, to the many local foods such as spring rolls, to the squalls and peddlers with umbrellas, one can sense the unique sentiment of Southeast Asia from every corner of these photos. Araki's photographs of people living vividly amidst the chaos of the streets evoke the atmosphere of old downtown areas and the original landscape of the Japanese family. At the end of the book, the Sankei Shimbun magazine's serialized version is also included, with a column by a reporter reporting on the journey.
