Mokujiki 木喰 (1718-1810) Yakushi Nyorai 薬師如来 Wood Carving Buddhism Statue Sculpture with Box

木喰 Mokujiki (1718-1810)
Mokujiki was a Buddhist ascetic, sculptor of Buddhist statues, and poet of the late Edo period. He was the creator of the “Mokujikibutsu,” a large number of which are still extant throughout Japan. He traveled throughout Japan, carving and dedicating wooden Buddhist statues wherever he visited. Mokujiki's style is completely different from that of traditional Buddhist sculpture, and the chisel marks are quite vivid and unconventional, but his sculptures express deep religious feelings in their simplicity, and their bold deformation has a novelty reminiscent of modern sculpture. The bold deformation of the statues is innovative and reminiscent of modern sculpture.

薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai is written “medicine master” and reads “Yakushi. Since ancient times, Yakushi Nyorai has been worshipped by many people as the Buddha who saves them from suffering from illness.
