De Ford Thunderbird werd in 1955 geïntroduceerd als antwoord op de Chevrolet Corvette, maar in plaats van een pure sportwagen koos Ford voor een luxueuzere benadering. De Thunderbird was bedoeld als een sportieve, elegante cruiser, perfect voor stijlvolle tochten, en werd direct een groot succes.
