Leopold II (1824-1859)
Founder of the Military Merit Order of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany
The three-class award, founded on December 19, 1853 by Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany and Archduke of Austria, was initially awarded exclusively for military merits (merito militare). In 1861, the order received a further division that honored not only military but also outstanding civilian achievements (merito civile).
The first class of the military decoration was intended for officers, who thereby acquired the right of hereditary nobility. It was worn on a ribbon around the neck.
The third class could also be awarded to non-commissioned officers and ordinary soldiers. After its official dissolution in 1860, the order continued to be awarded. Ferdinand IV, Archduke of Austria, awarded it until his death in 1908.
The golden first class order, surmounted by a crown, has the shape of a modified Maltese cross with five two-pointed arms. They are enamelled white and interwoven with an oak leaf wreath. The attached gold-bordered medallion bears the initials of the founder, "L II." and is framed by a medium blue ribbon with the inscription "MERITO MILITARE".
You will receive this order as a museum reproduction true to the original.
