An attractive medium-size six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined painting depicting scenes from The Tale of Genji 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari).
The artwork showcases different aristocrats engaging in leisurely pastimes around a grand pavilion. A noble boy, clad in a vibrant kimono, wades through water surrounded by blooming blue irises. Nearby, a man and woman sit on a raised platform over the water under a canopy, while others relax on an open veranda. In the background, attendants wait by a gosho’guruma 御所車 (an ox-drawn carriage favoured by Heian nobility), positioned under the branches of a cherry blossom tree 桜 (sakura).
Shiny gold-leaf clouds with a swirling relief design envelop the scenes.
This multi-coloured painting is set on a paper background with gold leaf highlights. Surrounded by two silk borders, a thin Bordeaux red one, and a wide multi-coloured one with flower motif. Protected by a black lacquered frame with metal hardware.
