Up for auction is a remarkable hand-painted byobu (folding screen) from the Meiji period or Later, featuring a vivid depiction of ancient Chinese life and architecture. This six-panel screen is a fine example of East Asian artistry, illustrating a serene landscape that merges tranquil natural elements with bustling human activity.

The artwork showcases an exquisite scene that includes traditional Chinese temples perched on mountainous terrain, adjacent to roiling seas. The human figures are depicted engaging in various activities, from boating to conversational gatherings, suggesting a snapshot of daily life. The attire of the figures and the architectural styles point to an era reminiscent of the sage Laozi's time, potentially the Eastern Zhou period, where Taoism was flourishing.
