The raised gold parts of the chestnuts create a sense of depth, and the intricate brushwork on the chestnut spines and leaf veins particularly enhances the luxurious feel. The interior features "Nashiji" lacquer, which is found only in high-end natsume. (Nashiji lacquer: a technique where gold powder is sprinkled onto a flat lacquered surface, covered with a transparent lacquer, and then polished to reveal the gold or silver underneath. It is called Nashiji because its appearance resembles the surface of a pear.)
