An outstanding wooden katana’dansu 刀箪笥 (cabinet of drawers for swords) in one section. Fully restored, cleaned and waxed.

Crafted from indigenous kiri (paulownia) wood and showcases a sought-after warm brown hue, which we refer to as ‘golden oak,’ enhanced by a beautiful aged patina.

The katana’dansu is configured with two full-width drawers, accompanied by a medium-sized and a small drawer, all designed to offer substantial storage capacity. Adorned with protective hand-forged iron hardware, featuring large rectangular lock plates embellished with raised chrysanthemum-shaped knobs. The sturdy ‘warabite’-shaped bail handles are set on oblong escutcheons,

The sides of the cabinet are fitted with rectangular ‘pole-carrying’ handles, allowing for convenient transport.

The katana’dansu is in a very good restored condition with some minimal traces of age and great aged patina. Remarkable seen its age. Please see the photos for a condition reference. No keys included.

Dimensions:
Height 42.5 cm, Width 109.7 cm, Depth 31.8 cm.
Width inside full-width drawers 102.8 cm.
Width inside smaller drawers 81.2 and 17.5 cm.

Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century).

Katana-dansu cabinets were traditionally used to store sword blades in several long drawers, primarily by blade polishers. The choice of Paulownia tomentosa (kiri) wood helped protect the blades from oxidization, particularly during the humid summer months. Its lightweight nature also made it easier to move the cabinet between samurai customers.

When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
