MFSL-version of Sticky fingers
And here it is. One of rock ‘n roll most notorious records. Band, music, lyrics and of course the sleeve are badass. Of course you know the album. No collection can be without it. And this particular one is a very special, rare and unique pressing with unbelievable sound. Also: a zipper like you never saw it
Sticky Fingers (1971) was the first album released by the Stones on their own label: Rolling Stone Records. And boy, did they enjoy not having to listen to executives. Everything was controversial, walking on the edge.
Sex, drugs, death, every vice was mentioned in the lyrics. Brown Sugar, the beautiful Sister Morphine, co-written by the Sister M. herself: Marianne Faithfull. And the wry Dead flowers. Dear Mick wants to send them to his (former) lover. She will get a fresh bouquet too: roses on her grave. I will not get into the lyrics of Bitch…
But it was of course all about the zipper. An Andy Warhol-production. Instantly recognizable. Over the years, and countries, the zipper differed. The closing thingie can be smaller, the hole can be round or rectangular. It was a nice idea, and smart. Naturally they knew the damage it would do. This record has to be kept apart. It cannot be together; it has no friends. Shop-owners had to place in in front of all others. DJs alike. Collectors too. And thus it was always in plain sight.
The zipper also turned out to be an identification of various outings. This one is a special one. Namely: no zipper. It is a fake one. But the record is not. It is the once-only MFSL-pressing, courtesy of the Japanese Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. This one is not about looks, but about content.
Long before the now almost standard 180 grams records, MFSL used extra-thick extra-purified vinyl. The plates were new, half-speed mastered and made with the rare Ortofon cutting method. Even then inner sleeve was special: anti-static and dust free. As for the pressing: you know what they can do in Japan with ordinary records, so you can imagine how much effort went into these. The result was a record that sounded better than the not yet invented CD ever would.
‘Nuff said. This is a record to be had. One of the most sought-after versions. Obligatory stuff. Even Keith would agree. Rejoice, this one is a beauty. You will not believe your ears!
