Shamanistic sculpture from West-Nepal
The statue originate from the Karmali river region. This area is populated mainly by the Khas group
or by Matwali Chetri, as they are sometimes called today.
They practice an unorthodox type of religion, worshipping local deities, mainly the Masta Brothers and the corresponding goddesses (Dhurga Bavani).
The statue guard the family, the house, the property, the bridges or the water
sources. In general, it protects against demons or more broadly all kinds of evil.
It was put near the place they are empowered to protect: on a pole near a
bridge, under the crossbeams of a roof, at a mountain passage, at water source…
Guardian figure showing Namaste greeting.
These figures used tot be placed inside small
prayer houses. The very dark patina is a result of the smoke and heavy fumes of oil lamps
inside these prayer houses. The sculpture shows heavy deterioration caused by
woodworms. The face shows an unusual representation of the human face.
Wood with a very dark patina.
