A fantastic, and very large rectangular wooden kanban 看板 (shop sign) featuring a large gilded red sea bream 赤鯛 (akadai) and a lobster 海老 (ebi) in front of two large, plump characters in red, ‘ôiri’ 大入, implying “many people coming.” This type of ôiri kanban is traditionally given by well-wishers to celebrate the opening of a new theatre, restaurant, or inn. After the opening, the sign is displayed to indicate that the establishment is sold out. The sign is set within a black lacquered frame, featuring inscriptions and protective metal hardware with floral design. Along the right side: “Central market Tamura [...]” 中央市場田村 […], and along the left: “For Mister Ichimizu Matsuoka” 一水松岡さんに. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912). Dimensions: Height 64.2 cm, Length 90.8 cm, Depth 4.5-7.5 cm. The sign is in very good condition, with expected traces of wear from being originally hung outside, as well as some restorations.
