A very rare set of the first appearance of possibly the most famous Sherlock Holmes long story. (Before ever being published in book form, Doyle’s legendary “Sherlock Holmes” series was first printed here in The Strand Magazine with illustrations by Sidney Paget)
Volumes 22 and 23 of The Strand magazine, published in 1901 and 1902 by George Newnes, London. Containing the first ever publication of the Sherlock Homes story "The Hound of the Baskervilles" over nine instalments.
Volume 22 covers July to December 1901 with five instalments of the Sherlock Holmes story, and Volume 23 January to June 1902 with four instalments. All Illustrations are illustrated by Sidney Paget. Both volumes are hard back editions, and have indexes to contents at the rear.
Volume 21 also contains the two final instalments of “The First Men in the Moon” and The“ New Accelerator” by H. G. Wells

Condition:
Vol 22 is bound in blue cloth with gilt title lettering and volume number in gilt on the spine. There is no volume title or half title page, Otherwise the volume is complete. Index at the rear of the book. The cloth is slightly rubbed, faded and stained, with wear to corners and spine ends. Inside the binding is firm, inner hinges are very good and pages are tightly held at gutters. Few pages with slight creases to edges, closed tears, and foxing to some pages throughout.
Vol 23 is bound in brown cloth with gilt title lettering and volume number in gilt on the spine. There is a volume title page and frontispiece, Otherwise the volume is complete. Index at the rear of the book. The cloth is rubbed and faded, with wear to corners and spine ends. Inside the binding is firm, inner hinges are very good and pages are tightly held at gutters. There are signs of some kind of messy cloth tape repair to the free endpaper pages. The frontispiece “The Shadow of Sherlock Holmes" and the front free endpaper are both torn and creased with a piece torn from the top corners of both pages, also the last index page is also got closed tear at top margin. Few pages with slight creases to edges, and foxing to some pages throughout (Please see pictures).
