ABOUT THE WORK
The mysterious photos of Kanade Hamamoto (2000, JP) show us a blurry, ghostly world. Using a Polaroid camera with a distored lens, a broken analogue camera and a handmade pinhole camera, the outcome of her photoshoots is never certain. Hamamoto admits that she also lacks extensive technical knowledge, but she uses this to her advance and she enjoys the excitement of discovering the end result. The portraits of her friends show confident people, because you don’t see their insecure glance. The faces are without details, almost like in a memory or in dreams, when these details become more ambiguous the harder you try to remember them. The portraits capture these imperfections of memory and perception.
“Ghosts usually appear during the night. If they appeared midday, the ghosts would look shiny while reflecting the sun rays. I always think that a ghost is an unreal moment that sneaks into our reality. For myself, taking pictures is the only way to catch this ‘midday ghost’. The unreal moment. midday ghost is the vision which actually does exist in our life, yet its outline is very abstract and insubstantial. When I gaze off into space, sometimes I feel an immersion that makes me feel like I am having an out-of-body experience. I hope someone who looks at these works will have a similar experience.”
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Born 2000 in Yokohama (JP), Kanade Hamamoto started her career as a photographer in 2019. Inspired by the ‘memory’ she creates her works using mixed-media techniques and a broken camera. In 2020, hito press published her first photobook midday ghost.
She has been working on the impromptu exhibition project VANISHING POINT since 2021.
ABOUT THE FIRST EDITIONS
The First Edition is a unique chance to buy work at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam by a young talent for an attractive price. Four times a year Foam Editions, the in-house gallery of Foam, presents a new photographer, carefully selected by Foam Editions. With this initiative Foam Editions facilitates a connection between young photographers and (potential) collectors. Previous First Editions were made by among others Paul Cupido, Sem Langendijk, Kevin Osepa, Lisette Appeldorn, Sarah van Rij and Suzette Bousema.
