Chris Steele-Perkins - Road works near Mount Fuji. Fujikawaguchiko, Japan, 1999

Chris Steele-Perkins. Road works near Mount Fuji. Fujikawaguchiko, Japan, 1999. "I stopped at some road works at night and Fuji was visible. I made a 4 minutes exposure and the flashing red lights combined with the green fluorescent light of Fujinomiya city reflecting from the clouds was almost hallucinogenic." 'Copyright Chris Steele-Perkins / Magnum Photos' on the back of the image. Total dimensions: 37,3 x 27,4 cm on semi-gloss paper. Fine condition (with small imperfections). "In Japan, ‘Red Fuji’ – meaning ‘Fuji tinged by evening light’ – is considered to be especially beautiful. People refer to this photo as my ‘Red Fuji’ picture, even though in the photo the mountain itself is not actually red. I like that apparent confusion, and this image ended up on the cover of my book, because it’s the sort of picture that you don’t interpret immediately; you look at it and wonder, ‘What is it? What’s going on?’ I want that. It’s ambiguous, and hopefully it draws people in.” One of the most influential photographers of the 20th century along with other photographers of his time such as: Man Ray, Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Margaret Bourke-White, Philippe Halsman, Diane Arbus, Inge Morath, Robert Doisneau, Robert Mapplethorpe, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Steve McCurry, among many others.
