Usaburo Kokeshi - Doll Plum - 2000-2010 - Japan
This is Usaburo Kokeshi doll "Plum" from Japan. (Flowers and Vases are not included in this lot)
The "Kokeshi," which originated as a traditional Japanese craft from children's toys, is handmade one by one.
The history of Kokeshi dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868), where it was believed to represent wishes
such as abundant harvests, good health, and children's growth in tangible forms.
Please feel the unique charm and warmth of handmade Kokeshi dolls, with expressions and colors
that highlight the gentle warmth of wood.
The "Usaburo Kokeshi" refers to Kokeshi made using a technique devised by Usaburo Okamoto in the Showa era (1926-1989), in the central part of Gunma Prefecture's Shinshu Village.
Born in Shinshu Village in 1917, Okamoto began making Kokeshi around 1950 in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture.
Subsequently, in 1979, he established a workshop in his hometown of Shinshu Village to start full-scale production of Usaburo Kokeshi.
The distinctive feature of Usaburo's Kokeshi-making is the incorporation of three-dimensional expressions by applying ingenuity (roundness) to the body and integrating brush painting with carving and pyrography.
While inheriting Usaburo Okamoto's original idea, Usaburo Kokeshi introduces new techniques and is meticulously crafted by skilled artisans through processes such as polishing and carving.
Thus, Usaburo Kokeshi, with its overlapping pyrography lines, beautiful gradients, and gently enveloping eyes, breathes new life into wood, creating rustic beauty.
