A. Schullerus - Siebenbürgisch-Sächsisches Wörterbuch. A-F - 1908-1926

Georg Keinzel; Friedrich Hofstädter und Adolf Schullerus, Bearb.: Siebenbürgisch-Sächsisches Wörterbuch. Mit Benutzung der Sammlung Johann Wolffs. Herausgegeben vom Ausschuss des Vereins für Siebenbürgisch-Sächsische Landeskunde. 1. Band, Lief. 1-2, 4-6 und 2. Band, Lief. 1-4 (A - F, missing vol. 1, part issue 3). Strassburg, Berlin und Leipzig: Karl J. Trübner und Walter De Gruyter & Co. (W. Krafft, Hermannstadt), 1908-[26]. 8vo. LXXII, 852; 518 pages. Letterpress on thin machine paper, in the original publisher's paper covers with title printing on front, rear side and spine. Particularly rare first edition of volumes 1 and 2 of the epochal and authoritative dictionary of Transylvanian Saxon, the native German dialect of one of three oldest ethnic German and German-speaking groups of the German diaspora in Central and Eastern Europe. Although the »Siebenbürgisch-Sächsisches Wörterbuch» is indispensable for the understanding not only of "Siebenbürgisch-Sächsisch" but also it's polyglot references to neighbouring languages like Hungarian, Romanian among others, and although tireless research, editing and publication activity by several generations of scholars since 1908, the monumental dictionary is still not finished until today. This is partly due to the political turmoil of the 20th centuries, as the language area of the Transylvanian Saxons was also a theatre of two world wars and subject to the political division of east and west in communist Romania and after. Over the decades and until recently further 8 volumes were published, in 1931, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1993, 1998, 2002, 2006 and last volume no. 11 (Schentzel - Schnappzagelchen) in 2020. In addition reprints of the several already published volumes appeared during the last decades, as each of the original volumes all became very hard to find due to the small print run. This is especially true for the present first and second volume, originally published by Trübner in Strassburg in 5 and 3 "Lieferungen" (part issues) resp. between 1908 and 1917 (A - Brett; D - Fretterei) and terminated by De Gruyter only in 1924 with part issue 6 (Brett - Christ) and 1926 with part issue 4 resp. (frêtzen - Fyst). They are particularly hard to find, particularly as part issues in the original wrappers. Parts I, 4-6 and II, 4 with owner's pencil signature "(Adolf) Meschendörfer" in lower right corner of wrappers recto. Adolf Meschendörfer (1877-1963) from Kronstadt (Brașov, Brassó)) was an important protagonist of Transylvanian Saxon literature. Condition: Missing 1 out of 10 part issues (vol. 1, part issue no. 3, 1912. – Some margins with small tears, paper in parts minimally foxy, otherwise very well preserved indeed; mostly unread and hence unread issues.
