La labradorite è un plagioclasio sodico-calcico triclino (feldspato) costituito dal 50 al 30% circa di albite e dal 50 al 70% circa di anortite. Deve il suo nome a Labrador, in Canada, principale luogo di provenienza ove fu conosciuta sin dal 1770.
Caratteristica di questo minerale è il fenomeno della labradorescenza dovuto alla natura lamellare della struttura del minerale, parallela alla meno perfetta direzione di sfaldatura , sulla quale la luce agisce con particolari effetti di riflessione ed assorbimento. Ciò si manifesta su un fondo opaco, grigio più o meno scuro, con splendidi riflessi lucenti, metallici, di intenso colore azzurro, rosso, verde, giallo, bruno. Il bellissimo gioco di colori è messo in evidenza quando si osservi la superficie di sfaldatura della labradorite in una determinata direzione.
La labradorite è utilizzata nella meditazione ed ha il potere di alleviare il dolore fisico e gli attacchi di panico.
