Indus Valley Terracotta Zebu Bulls (2)
Circa 3rd millennium BC
A charming pair of creme-coloured ceramic figurines of zebu bulls. Each animal is painted with stripes on the back and shoulders, and on exaggerated crescent horns. The bull, with its hump and powerful horns, is a recurring motif in the Indus Valley.
The Zebu bull is a domesticated cattle breed originating from the Indian subcontinent. This distinct breed is recognized for its unique physical characteristics, with a prominent hump over the shoulders and large, droopy ears. Zebu bulls typically exhibit a hump composed of fatty tissue, providing them with resilience in hot and arid climates, making them well-suited for various agricultural tasks.
