It began when Matsudaira Yorishige, who was appointed to the Takamatsu Domain from the Mito Tokugawa family in 1638 during the first half of the Edo period, had a deep knowledge of lacquerware and sculpture and promoted it. Currently, five techniques, namely, carved lacquer, konjyo, zonosei, Goto-nuri, and Zokoku-nuri, are designated as traditional crafts by the country.
