The Chartreuse liqueur dates back to 1605, when in a monastery near Paris the monks received as a gift from the marshal of Henry IV a manuscript, bearing the recipe of an alchemist who is an expert in herbs and able to treat them to create a beneficial remedy.
After years of trying to interpret the manuscript, the first practical formula for the reproduction of this 'Elixir of long life' was created in the early 1700s. Nowadays this recipe is reproduced exclusively by the monks of the Chartreuse, who refer to the ancient manuscript to recreate what is now called the 'élixir végétale de la Grande-Chartreuse'.
The secret recipe contains 130 herbs that are macerated in quality alcohol and then distilled. We then aging in oak stems in the evocative wineries of Voiron.
Chartreuse Verte is the world's only all-natural green liqueur. It is recommended to consume it at a very cold temperature. Traditionally considered as an after-dinner digestive, but increasingly also used as a long drink.
