Large horse decorated in terracotta from the Northern Qi region.
NORTHERN QI 549-577 AD
Polychrome terracotta.
Thermoluminescence certificate is attached.
Measurements: 58.00 cm x 53.00 cm
Provenance: M. L. F. Private Collection, Madrid. Purchased from an antique dealer in Hong Kong.

Figure of a horse, made of polychrome terracotta, probably with the usual slips of the time (cold applied), which could have been part of the funerary trousseau of some prominent member of the Northern QI region. It stands out for the naturalistic way in which the artist has portrayed it, capturing the face in detail and adopting an elegant and majestic position striding on a trapezoidal base.

The Chinese state of Northern Qi was the successor state to the Chinese state of Xianbei of Eastern Wei, and was founded by Emperor Wenxuan. As supreme general of Eastern Wei, he was succeeded by his sons Gao Cheng and Gao Yang. He assumed the throne from Emperor Xiaojing of Eastern Wei in 550 and established the Northern Qi dynasty, as Emperor Wenxuan. Although Northern Qi was plagued by violence and deteriorating armies for most of its existence, when it was established, it was the strongest state of the three major Chinese states, (along with the Northern Zhou state and the Chen dynasty). . Like most imperial dynasties, it gradually declined and was destroyed by the Northern Zhou in 577.

A embalagem era desadequada porque não garantiu a preservação da peça. Verficou-se a quebra de uma parte da peça.
