Impressive George III large sterling silver fruit dish. Lobed round body divided into 6 panelled sections and resting on a spreading circular foot. The bowl has two figural handles modelled as winged dogs / gargoyles. The centre of the bowl has a wonderfully ornate repoussage of pear, apples, grapes and other fruit; the panels are engraved and embossed with scrolls, foliage and various blooming flowers.

There are 2 vacant shield cartouches, so this bowl can be engraved and personalised as a present.

The maker's mark is very rubbed, but under a magnifying glass a partial "IWW" is visible, for J W Story and W Elliott.

The shape and design of this bowl is reminiscent of Dutch brandy bowls that were popular in the 17th century.

Maker: J W Story & W Elliott
Assay office: London
Date: 1812

602 g / 19.4 t oz
7.3 cm tall to rim
8.5 cm tall to handle

12 cm base diameter

Excellent antique condition. Some tiny nicks and dings appropriate to age; maker’s mark rubbed; seam visible on the inside of the foot; tiny split to foot; tiny crack to rim that has been soldered over.

Un joli petit bijou . Un vendeur sérieux, victime des circonstances comme moi. Car recevoir un colis de Grande-Bretagne est, désormais, une coûteuse aventure, qui se termine bien, dans ce cas .

Seller's response

I am sorry for the disappointment, but I believe the buyer is being unreasonable. The pendant was clearly described as "Large oval statement pendant of a prehistoric fish fossil mounted in 18ct yellow gold." When it arrived, the buyer wrote to me: "The problem is that from the description and photos you couldn't understand that it's not all gold but there is a stone in the middle". I fail to see how anyone could not understand that a fossil is not made of solid gold and Catawiki agreed with me, closing the dispute in my favour.

Broche originale. La livraison a été assez longue (douane?)
