Jan Damschreuder was born in Amsterdam in 1825, when figure and history paintings were still in their heyday. He specialised in scenes from the Dutch past as well as narrative interiors with figures, which he gave titles such as 'the sailor's return' and 'grandmother's visit'. His depictions with children were especially prized.
