An oinochoe, also spelled as oenochoe (Ancient Greek for wine pourer) is a wine jug. They typically have only one handle, which may be opposite a trefoil mouth and pouring spout.
At its most distinct development, the trefoil mouth offers three alternative directions of pouring, one opposite the handle, and two to the side, which can be a big advantage at a crowded table.
Most oenochoae were in terracotta, but the higher classes could afford them in (precious) metals.
Their characteristic form was popular throughout the Bronze Age (especially at Troy) and later spread around Mediterranean civilizations.
