Roman goddess Minerva (the Greek goddess Athena) was the goddess of strategic warfare and wisdom. Athena represented the disciplined, strategic side of war.
Around 82 AD, Emperor Domitian founded the First Legion Minervia, the full name seems to have been I Flavia Minervia: Flavia being the family name of Domitian, and Minerva being his favorite deity. According to coins from the 3rd century, the emblem was a statue of this warrior goddess or the Capricorn, the sign of the zodiac that is ruled by Minerva.
