Delve into the realm of Japanese folklore with this captivating pair of Aka-Oni and Ao-Oni masks, a representation of traditional demons from the ancient stories and cultural rituals of Japan. The Aka-Oni, with its vibrant red color, embodies greed, while the Ao-Oni's striking blue signifies malice and hatred. These iconic figures are associated with the Buddhist concept of Kleshas, or mental states that cloud the mind and manifest in the form of earthly vices. Traditionally used during Setsubun and other ceremonies to expel such negative traits, these masks offer a symbolic and powerful statement.

Crafted from wood with meticulous attention to detail in the 20th century, these masks serve as intriguing wall hangings or standalone decorative pieces. Note that they do not come with a hanging cord, but they are designed with holes for ease of display.

The Aka-Oni mask has a repair on one of its horns. Both masks show signs of age and wear including minor scratches, paint chippings, and marks. For a thorough understanding of their condition, please see the accompanying photographs.
