Basilosaurus - Fossilised jaw - Zeuglodon, Basilosauridae - 63 cm - 16.4 cm
This is a beautiful lower right jaw of Basilosaurus, one of the first genera of whales. Basilosaurus was the largest animal on earth at the time. It could grow to 15 to 18 meters long and weighed about 60 tons.
I have personally visited the area where this jaw fragment was found (Western Sahara, Gueran near Boujdour) and therefore I now have good contacts there. The jaw fragment has a length of 63 cm and is 16.4 cm high. The jaw was broken in several places in the layer. The jaw fragment has been stabilized and the cracks have been filled. Some missing parts have also been filled. The five molars have also been stabilized and some have been glued and the cracks have been filled. The last incisor has been glued and filled. The amount of restoration to the jaw is less than 10% and that is very little for this type of find that is always broken in the layer.
