Wearing tripartite wig and false beard, traces of white and blue pigment, on a rectangular base.
This mummiform figure represents the mortuary deity Ptah-Sokar-Osiris. Dedicated to a temple musician named Ihet, it is inscribed with offering prayers and texts glorifying the gods. The figure was constructed in one piece of wood, with six tenons used to fasten the lid to the box, and then set into a rectangular base. Most figures of this type have some sort of cavity that contains a roll of papyrus, a piece of cloth, or some sort of mummified material.
Found most often in tombs, close to the coffin, such figures are thought to help protect the body of the deceased and help to guarantee their rebirth.
The Ptah-Sokar-Osiris figure in ancient Egyptian religion combines aspects of three important gods: Ptah, Sokar, and Osiris.
Ptah was a creator deity associated with craftsmen and the arts, often depicted as a mummified figure with a skullcap and scepter. Sokar, on the other hand, was a god of the underworld and craftsmen, depicted as a falcon-headed figure or a mummified man with a falcon's head. Osiris, perhaps one of the most significant gods, represented the afterlife, resurrection, and fertility. He was usually shown as a mummified king wearing the Atef crown with ostrich feathers.
The Ptah-Sokar-Osiris figure symbolizes the journey of the deceased through death and rebirth, embodying the cycle of life and regeneration in Egyptian beliefs. It reflects the idea of continuity beyond death and was often found in funerary contexts like tomb decorations or as amulets buried with the dead to ensure their safe passage to the afterlife.
