【Product details】

Step back in time with this 113g iron tsuba from the Edo period, featuring a distinctive mokkō shape with heart-shaped openwork. This fine piece was crafted by Echizen-jū Kinai, a celebrated tsuba-maker whose lineage began in the Kan'ei era when the first generation Kinai moved from Ōmi to Echizen. The Kinai family, prominent through the late Edo period, was a leading force in Echizen tsuba craftsmanship. 

The Kinai family often inscribed their signature discreetly on the backside, a practice thought to be out of respect for their lordly patrons. Their works are renowned for their artistry; however, distinguishing between the different generations within the Kinai lineage can be challenging due to the varied signatures and the inclusion of disciples' and workshop productions.

This tsuba's design includes two heart cutouts, one at the top and one at the bottom, adding a unique charm to its traditional form. The signature "Echizen-jū Kinai saku" (made by Kinai, a resident of Echizen) is engraved on it, testifying to its authenticity.

Despite its age, the tsuba is in good condition, with only minor wear, scratches, and some slight rust. For a detailed assessment of its condition, please refer to the accompanying photographs.
