Introducing a rare and captivating Syro-Hittite terracotta goddess figure, a relic of the Ancient Near East from the 3rd millennium BCE. This figure stands 140mm in length and 48mm wide, representing the zenith of religious expression in pottery from northern Syria.

The statue's design features a stylized, avian-like face, complete with a pinched, beak-like nose and large, annular eyes set beneath a pronounced brow and crested coiffure. These eyes are emblematic of the era's belief in maintaining vigilance and attentiveness as a form of devotion.

Adorning the deity are multiple, thick-layered necklaces across her broad shoulders, tapering down to a flared, floor-length dress. The goddess’s arms, positioned to emulate wings, are folded at the elbows with hands placed on her chest—a gesture of reverence and supplication.

Despite minor chipping at the base and a small nick to the nose, along with surface abrasions, the figure remains in excellent condition. The detail is well-preserved, augmented by light earthen deposits that testify to its antiquity.

This figure was part of a distinguished private collection in Orange County, California, acquired before the year 2000. Its intact condition and remaining detail make it a significant piece for collectors, resonating with the rich spiritual heritage of its time.

Visual Analysis:
The Syro-Hittite goddess statue's terracotta composition and the stylistic elements are characteristic of the period's religious iconography. The eyes, serving as a focal point, reflect the wide-awake attentiveness required in ancient worship. The necklace's detailed representation and the arms' positioning, reminiscent of wings, signal the high craftsmanship of the era and the significance of the divine figure in ritual practices. Despite its age, the figure's integrity and the clarity of its devotional posture offer a direct connection to the spiritual life of the ancient Near East, making it a cherished artifact for both historical and aesthetic appreciation.
