Nel 1883 i fratelli Josef e Jan Frič fondarono a Praga un'"officina per la meccanica di precisione", per la quale producevano apparecchi speciali per dividere cerchi, rettificare lenti, ecc. La ditta Josef & Jan Frič (il nome dell'azienda è stato utilizzato in diverse varianti ) ottenne successo già all'Esposizione Nazionale di Praga nel 1891. Dopo il 1906, il polarimetro per la determinazione del contenuto di zucchero fu accettato come standard ufficiale degli Stati Uniti.

Nel corso della sua esistenza l'azienda familiare dei fratelli Frič ha prodotto tutta una serie di strumenti geodetici, tra cui il prestigioso teodolite di triangolazione 6R con micrometri a vite con lettura stimata fino a 2" e strumenti speciali per la misurazione delle deformazioni delle dighe e per le gallerie costruzione.
