Deze ‘Mercedes-Benz’ Gazelle (getitled als 1987), is een van de kitgebouwde tribute cars die begin jaren negentig werden geproduceerd door Classic Motor Carriages uit Florida. De Gazelle lijkt op de baanbrekende en dure – toen en nu – Mercedes-Benz SSK uit eind jaren twintig en vertegenwoordigt een van de meest toegankelijke manieren om van zo’n onderscheidend ontwerp te genieten. Deze Gazelle uit 1982 wordt beschreven als een auto van twee eigenaren die sinds nieuw in een geklimatiseerde garage staat wanneer hij niet wordt gebruikt. Nadat de bouw van deze Mercedes-Benz SSK tribute car was voltooid is er nooit veel mee gereden, de auto heeft dan ook nog een uitzonderlijk lage miles stand van 00624. Documentatie van Classic Motor Carriages wordt meegeleverd, evenals een tonneau cover waarmee de auto snel afgedekt kan worden.

Deze nette kleine Gazelle iets betaalbaarder en waarschijnlijk net zo leuk om in te rijden. Ze zijn beroemd uit bouwpakketten opgebouwd en waren een behoorlijk succesvolle manier voor de ondernemende hobbyist om zichzelf iets te doen te geven in het weekend en uiteindelijk een van de beter geproportioneerde replica's uit die periode te hebben. En het is nog steeds een genot om te rijden!

Voor een tribute car van glasvezel zijn de pasvorm en afwerking opmerkelijk goed, met gelijkmatige deuropeningen, een nauwsluitend kofferdeksel en een glanzende lak die bekend is bij iedereen die ooit een andere Gazelle heeft gereden, gebouwd of zelfs gezien. Deze wordt niet geaccentueerd door een tweekleurige crèmekleurige en bruine lak maar een stoerdere en opvallende rode lak. Andere details zoals de chromen grille, rubberen treeplanken en verchroomde spaakwielen maken allemaal deel uit van de vintage-illusie en alles blijft in zeer goede staat, dus je weet dat de auto geliefd was en goed werd behandeld.

De stoelen zijn pure jaren 80-coole, uit één stuk bestaande Buckskin-leren kuipen die er futuristisch uitzien, zelfs in de vintage ogende Gazelle-carrosserie. De auto is verder voorzien van prachtige retro-instrumenten en een houten stuurwiel. Er is een bijpassende achterbank die waarschijnlijk het beste is gereserveerd voor kinderen of uw aktetas. De bescherming tegen weersinvloeden bestaat uit zeer 1929-achtige opvouwbare kap, maar ze geven de auto in werkelijkheid een zeer strak uiterlijk en sluiten beter af dan veel auto's uit het beoogde tijdperk.

In tegenstelling tot de meeste Mercedes SSK 1929 tribute cars, is deze auto niet gebouwd op VW basis maar voorzien van een GMC frame en een krachtige (gereviseerde) 225 PK sterke 3,4L V6 Mercury motor die meer dan genoeg vermogen produceerd voor deze lichte auto. Dit is echt een spectakel om in te rijden! 

Kortom een leuke klassieker en zeker een blikvanger. Niet iedereen heeft er zelfs een gezien, gebaseerd op de klassieker uit 1929 die bijna iedereen kent, behalve voor de zeer welgestelden en origineel. Hier hebben we een lichte tribute car met alles erop en eraan. Bespaar al het gedoe en heb gewoon plezier.

Wacht dus niet te lang en laat deze kans niet liggen om de eigenaar te worden van deze unieke jaren '20 Mercedes-Benz - tribute - cabriolet.
