Refurbished Shakó for the 12th Regiment of the New York National Guard, circa 1890.
The gilded brass front insignia (9,5 cm high x 8,5 cm wide) belongs to the 12th Regiment, created in 1861 as a volunteer militia in the American Civil War. It shows the eagle (symbol of the USA) and the motto of the state of New York ('Excelsior', meaning 'even higher').
Behind the badge there is a slot, probably to insert a possible gala ornament that it must have had at some point (not included).
All original parts (central body, inner with sweatband, leather visor, insignia and the thick surrounding silver cord), except for two that due to poor condition were replaced during refurbishment: the top part and the outer lining in the same original curious color. Other than this everything is 19th century and thoroughly cleaned.
