Qing Dynasty glazed figure accompanied by a horse on a terracotta base. The figure is dressed in a navy robe, a turquoise belt and a green undergarment, with their hair done up in a typical high bun hairstyle. The facial features of both the figure and the horse are rendered delicately, with clearly engraved eyes and eyebrows in black pigment, with lips and ears in pinkish-red pigments, presenting a peaceful expression on their faces. The horse is adorned with turquoise riding equipment, a black and green saddle and two large buckets attached onto each side. Some earthly encrustations on the surface.

The appearance of horses as a mingqi in burial contexts reflects the desire of having the animal accompany the deceased throughout their journey in the afterlife. Indeed, Chinese belief saw the afterlife as an extension of the worldly life, with mingqi providing a material manifestation of the belief system of a given time period. Horses especially were considered essential, for their use in both warfare and daily life. Buried in tombs since the Warring States (275-221 BC) and popularised during the Han Dynasty (220 BC – AD 220), mingqi endured across the centuries.
