      ¶ Reference work on the Ibanic peoples from Borneo covering all art forms such as weaving, wooden statuary, tattoo designs, plaiting, pottery, carving bone into sword hilts, iron into swords, and brass into jewelry. This publication is especially strong on textiles, masks, weapons and wood carvings. Most objects originate from high status Sarawakian families and have not been published before. The Iban pose an answer to the question about the origins of art.  They use art to choose their mate or spouse.  A good artist demonstrates intelligent genes and a partner wants to ensure that such genes are passed on to his or her children. For the Iban, therefore, art is the ultimate IQ test. In addition to explaining the various Iban art forms, this study demonstrates this tradition through extensive reference to Iban poetry - itself an important art form.

      ¶ This book presents a detailed and inspiring picture of the traditional ways of life and the impressive art of the Mentawai archipelago located off the west coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. This shamanistic culture, most notably found on the northernmost island of Siberut, maintains an ancient relationship between man and the spiritual world. Within this worldview, everything is animated. Not only do humans have souls, but so do animals, plants and objects. To please these souls and to create harmony, alluring artifacts have been created for generations. In this way life, art, ritual and esthetics are intertwined: a notion reflected in the field photographs and in the beautiful and rare objects that are described and illustrated here. 'Toys for the Souls' reveals for the first time the richness and creative power of an artistic imagination, deeply rooted in Southeast Asian prehistory.

      ¶ Shamans in Southeast Borneo once donned anthropomorphic amulets (Jurookng) strung on a necklace in order to help them deal with the spirit world, in particular when healing the ill. Such figurines, embodying spirits, were also widely carried, or kept, by the common people as a means of protection against malicious spirits, black magic and other dangers.
This abundantly illustrated analysis is based on a lengthy tradition of reports by, among others, colonial officials, missionaries, ethnographers and shamans themselves. It introduces a spectacular set of 64 such as well as similar shamanic amulets, acquired during the 1960s.
Jurookng are understudied, despite their stylistic beauty and richly varied, intriguing iconography. Albeit small in size, in both respects they surpass the majority of the larger manufactured.

      ¶ 'Of Jars and Gongs' deals with the traditional art of Ot Danum Dayak. Much of their art depicts the journey of the soul of the deceased through a richly variegated spirit world. The present publication offers a comparative analysis of various Ot Danum ritual objects. It draws on a long tradition of ethnographic writing on the area stretching back to the mid-19th century, mainly by German and Swiss Protestant missionaries and Dutch colonials.

      ¶ Serving as a Protestant missionary doctor in Central Kalimantan during the early 1950s, Arnoud H. Klokke travelled far up the great rivers to visit villages of the Ngaju and Ot Danum peoples.This book presents a selection of Dr. Klokke's fascinating photographs depicting the exceptional cultural heritage of these Dayak groups as well as a number of objects he collected which are now kept in the National Museum of Ethnology (Leiden, the Netherlands).
