A Baule mask of hollowed form, Ivory Coast, with different metal decorations like brass nails around the mask, triangular brass sheets on the cheeks and an aluminium disc on the forehead: heavy, hard wood, brownish surface with some abrasions by longlasting ritual use, incl. certificate of origin and provenance.

"Traditionally, few men and even fewer women ever had the opportunity to look at the carved face-mask witout itscostume. Masks are kept out of sight between dancers. Goli maskss are spposed to be kept in the bush; Mdo masks are hung from the thatch of their dancer´s sleepingrooms in the village, carefully wrapped in cotton cloth..This cloth is partly to prevent women from seeing the mask´s back, and to keep insects away,"
