Biografia de  Osvaldo Salas:

SALAS Freire, Osvaldo Eustasio (La Habana, 29 de marzo de 1914-5 de mayo de 1992).

Fotógrafo. Sus padres se trasladaron a Nueva York en 1928 y allí trabajó como mecánico y soldador (1929-1949). Se vinculó al club fotográfico Inwood Camara Club, en 1947, y al año siguiente ganó el primer premio del concurso anual de la clase B. En 1949 fue seleccionado entre los diez mejores de la clase A del club. En 1950 abrió, frente al Madison Square Gardens, su estudio fotográfico. Retrató a Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Sarita Montiel, Imperio Argentina, Joe DiMaggio, Rocky Marciano, Ted Williams, Roy Campanella y Sugar Ray Robinson, entre otras celebridades del cine y el deporte. Colaboró para la revista Efe. En 1959 regresó a Cuba y trabajó en el diario Revolución. Reportó los viajes de Fidel a Venezuela y EE.UU y los hechos más importantes que ocurrían en el país. Fue fundador del diario Granma. En 1983 la OIP le concedió el título de Maestro Internacional en Fotografia de Prensa. Sus obras se han presentado en países de Europa y América Latina, y ha recibido numerosos premios nacionales y extranjeros. En 1981 se le otorgó la distinción Por la Cultura Nacional; en 1982, el premio Después de los 60, de la Misión Cubana de la UNESCO, y en 1985, el Girasol de Cristal de la revista Opina (el único recibido por un fotógrafo), entre otros galardones. Sus fotografias han ilustrado varios libros como: Che Guevara and the Cuban Revolution (1987); Alicia, maravilla de la danza (1988; The Human Right to Dignity and Changing the History of Africa (1989); Fidel (de la serie Barbudos, 1996); Cuba: la fotografia de los años 60 (1988); Cuba: 100 años de fotografía, editado por Mestizo, España, en 1998 y Canto a la realidad Fotografía latinoamencana, 1860-1993, editado por Lunwerg Editores S.A, España, 1993.

Su obra está presente en museos y galerías de todo el mundo.
