Kuno Prey entra a far parte del gruppo di designer che Alessi chiama per riprendere la produzione della Battista Piazza.
Nel 1988 Alessi ha l'idea di produrre oggetti in legno. Fu fatale l'incontro con uno degli eredi di Battista Piazza, una piccola fabbrica vicina che aveva cessato l'attività vent'anni prima. Migliorarono la qualità utilizzando una notevole varietà di legni – ebano, rosa, pero, melo, ciliegio, olivo, faggio, acero, faggio, tiglio, ontano, noce, acacia e betulla – mantenendo gli stessi metodi di produzione. È stata la prima opportunità che ha permesso al programma metaprogetto Alessi di costituire una nuova piccola realtà indipendente pur rimanendo legata alla strategia di sviluppo della casa madre. Sono stati molti i designer di successo che hanno collaborato a questa nuova avventura.
