Crusader states, Kingdom of Jerusalem. Jean de Brienne (1210-1225). Drachme/Dirham Acre 1212-1217

Very rare Drachma/Dirham, struck in Acre between 1212 and 1217. Weighed mass: 2.65 grams. Measured diameter: 21.0 mm Obverse: A short-footed cross with a pearl in the second and third quarters. Front inscription: + IOHANNES REX Reverse: The Church of the Holy Sepulcher or Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem. Reverse of inscription : + DE IERVSALEM. These large silver coins from Jan van Brienne were probably an attempt to introduce a larger value, but apparently not really accepted by the population, so that the minting was quickly stopped and the type can be called quite rare. Metcalf believes that production may have been after 1212, but before the ill-fated Fifth Crusade to Egypt in 1217. The Knights Hospitaller would have made use of it in any case. Metcalf Ash. p. 74.
