In de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw ontstond een nieuwe categorie mechanische horloges voor de sector van bewaking en beveiliging van gebouwen en faciliteiten, die zijn hoogtepunt zal bereiken in het eerste derde deel van de vorige eeuw. Deze eenheden, uitgerust met de modernste technologie voor die tijd en gemaakt in Duitsland, zullen binnenkort een voorwerp van dagelijks gebruik worden door de verplegers en nachtwakers van instellingen en fabrieken die ze gebruiken tijdens hun nacht- en dagrondes. Eerst gebouwd in vaste materialen zoals brons en ijzer en later in lichtere verbindingen zoals aluminium, maakten ze het mogelijk om het werk van werknemers a posteriori te controleren en te verifiëren dat ze persoonlijk aan hun verplichtingen hadden voldaan op de aangegeven punten, een van de eeuwige doelstellingen van de controles.
