Together with the NOK, the Sokoto and the Katsina, the Djenne terracotta figures belong to the oldest and earliest artistic expressions in Africa. Because of their rarity and strong artistic expression, these figurines are among the most sought and valuable sculptures within the tribal art market!
The Djenne figurines were only discovered in the 20th century, at about 3 km from the current Djenné city (Sub-Saharan Africa – Mali). The excavated sculptures date from 250 B.C to 900 A.D – this presented figurine dates from the “phase 3” period: 300-900 A.D, and is provided with diverse typical aspects from the Djenne-style: an egg-shaped head with many scarifications ; bulging eyes and pronounced nose and lips ; a massive trunk with scarifications and ornamentations on the backside ; passive arms, laying close to the body.
This very rare figurine remains in a good condition, besides a few inevitable age damages on the mouth and on one eye. Further on, the right arm had a professional restoration – only visible if you look attentively for it.
Height of the figurine: 17 cm (26.5 cm stand included).
Museum quality. 

Provenance: old, renowned Belgian missionary collection (Vercruysse collection).
